CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER,
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
"From 1983-88 I was the Theatre Education Coordinator for the Contemporary
Arts Center of New Orleans. ...When the opportunity permitted, visiting artists
.... offered professional seminars and workshops as a special educational event.
In 1986, Strasberg-trained Lorrie Hull conducted the first in a series
of weekend Strasberg Method workshops. Her work with our conservatory students
and other professionals in the acting community created such an interest in the
Strasberg Method that four classes involving 45 students resulted.
In return engagements, Lorrie was joined by Actor's Studio member and actor William
Smithers, who extended the training to include insightful scene critiques that
challenged and developed the actor. His commanding teaching/directing style provided
the perfect balance for Lorrie's masterful demonstration of Strasberg training
exercises.
Fourteen years later local actors, both professional and community, continue to
recognize the Hull and Smithers' workshops as a defining experience in their training
as actors. I would encourage any serious
training center to offer a similar educational experience in their community.
